A number of factors contribute to basement flooding in Toronto: severe weather, ageing pipe systems, and deteriorating home foundations are just a few culprits if you find yourself with a damp basement. CPL Tech has served many of its customers with their reliable city plumbing services in Toronto. However, there are many things you can do to significantly reduce the risk of your basement flooding, despite these external forces. Your property may even benefit from the use of a sewer inspection camera to determine whether any repairs are needed and to evaluate whether the pipes are showing signs of wear and tear.
The primary way to reduce risk is to isolate your home from the city’s sewer system. The City of Toronto is even offering subsidies to eligible home owners to assist them with this effort. These subsidies can provide home owners with up to $3,400 to put toward the installation of flood protection devices.
- It must be assessed by a Plumbing Contractor (T94, T92) licensed in the City of Toronto, who must determine whether the property is suitable for isolation from the sewer system.
- A licensed contractor must perform the work; look for a contractor with a 9-digit license number beginning with T94, T92, T87, or T85. You can check on the status of a contractor’s City of Toronto license by calling the Municipal Licensing & Standards department at 416-392-6700. If the contractor is not properly licensed, your request for a subsidy will be denied.
- The work must involve the installation of a backwater valve or sump pump, or the disconnection of the foundation drains from the city’s sewer system.
- The property must meet certain eligibility requirements, including being a single-family residential, duplex, or triplex property, and being constructed prior to January 1, 2009.
